Large Google map of Wick High St. |
Way up in the far North of Scotland is the Royal Burgh of Wick. If you have reached this far, you'll be pleased to know that it's just a stone's throw to John o'Groats from here! Don't forget to visit the old castle, which dates back to the 1500s and the nearby town of Thurso. Wick has the shortest street in the world. Ebenezer Place is just 6 ft 9 in (2.1m) long and is located between Union Street and River Street. The one property is the entrance to Ebenezer's Bar, part of MacKay's Hotel. The Guinness Book of Records approved the claim in October 2006, displacing the previous contender, Elgin Street in Bacup Lancashire, which is 17ft long. By contrast, the longest street is Yonge Street in Ontario, which is 1,118 miles (1,800 km) long. The Ronald P A Smith Street Maps web site has further useful information about Wick. There is also a link to Wick on the Caithness Community web site. |
